How Does Being Overweight Affect Your Body
Our bodies require a certain level of fat for it to function properly. Fat is a stored energy and is needed in the several systems of our body, including hormonal, reproductive, and immune systems. Fat is also responsible in maintaining our body’s temperature at a constant level through thermal insulation or trapping heat. Fat also acts as a buffer that absorbs shock for vital and sensitive areas and it is also a form of reserved energy.
But having too much fat stored in your body can affect movement; as observed from overweight people, they appear to move a bit sluggish compared to ones that do not have weight issues. Carrying extra weight means greater force is exerted to your body, especially the lower area where your legs are. Your appearance would also pretty much get affected, most noticeable would be your belly.
If you have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25-30 this means that you are overweight. Also a common misconception is that the terms overweight and obese are interpreted as one. Take note that these two are different, but both means having excess fat stored in the body. The only difference is that obesity is on a much higher level. Being obese means you have a BMI of 30 and above. Being either of these two doesn’t make you safe from health risks.
Another issue is that most people only see it as an appearance problem and not know how much of a threat it is to their health. Though the risks are lesser compared to obesity, it is still alarming since the medical issues that come along with being overweight would take a huge impact in their present and future life. Just to name a few and a brief explanation of each are as follows.
From the fact that you are overweight, you are likely to develop a bone deformity of the lower leg in where the part bows outward due to excess force and weight exerted and is called the Blount disease. It is common in growing children with overweight issues. In adults, arthritis is very likely to happen. It is experienced as pain and inflammation of the joints carrying the extra body weight due to the reason that the legs have to exert more effort leading to wear and tear of the joints. Overweight children too aren’t safe from it.
Now moving on to a higher level, resistance to insulin might also develop. Insulin levels drop to a low level, thus it becomes hard for the body to properly regulate the amount of sugar in our blood and cause diabetes later on. It also known that a person with diabetes has a very high chance of developing various complications if not met with proper medication.
Another alarming condition is sleep apnea. A person with this disorder randomly stops breathing in their sleep. This is an alarming disorder can be very stressful because people who are experiencing this tend to get anxious. Thus depriving them of proper asleep affecting behavior during the day and may develop heart problems.
The rise of both blood pressure and cholesterol level is also very probable. The increase in these two would also lead to further complications if not met with the proper medication and may lead to heart attack and stroke.
